Anza Borrego Desert State Park

Wildflowers in the desert don't appear every year so, when Mark heard that the conditions for blooming were perfect, we decided to take a trip to Borrego Springs, located right in the middle of Anza Borrego State Park. One looks out at the barren landscape and wonders how any life could survive in such a desolate, dry, location. But you only need to walk out into the desert and take a good look at the ground to see the most incredible variety of flowers (and bugs) every where. Mark managed to capture photos of the 17 flowers in my collage in only a few hours of exploring. You can only flower hunt, as far as I'm concerned, before 10:00 am or after 5:00 pm - man is it hot out there! Luckily we stayed over night at a golf resort with a pool, where we spent most of the afternoon lying in the shade.
There's an article our newspaper called "If you go" which offers advice to travelers, so here is my advice if you go to Borrego Springs:
1. bring water, lots of water
2. bring food - there are 5 restaurants in town that don't rely on repeat business
3. check the internet for information on when the flowers are blooming
4. pick up a map at the visitor's center, to avoid crowds go early to the places they suggest ( you can avoid crowds entirely if you don't go to suggested places)
5. be prepared to be amazed!

Wow, these photos are amazing. Looks like you two had a great weekend. I have yet to make it to the Anza Borrego desert, but will try to soon. Although it sounds like things are already unbearable out there. So maybe we will wait until Fall. :)

Great photos! Seeing the desert in bloom is definitely on my travel wishlist. I can't wait to see the real thing one day.

Louis and I had Ethiopian for the first time here in T.O. Here's my tip for food tourists. Don't share an Ethiopian meal with people who have colds! Louis and I didn't get sick...but the thought of their hands on my food was enough to lessen the meal's appeal...

What beautiful flowers! and the variety of colour and shapes.
You Californians sure talk and dress funny. Who in their right mind will wear shorts and sandals in March, and talk about weather being unbearable(too hot)now and have to wait until Fall to go outside. We are just waiting patiently for Spring to come so that we can go out in our hoodies and (parkas).
Okay, I am just so jealous.

Beautiful photos! They look like they could've been taken from a Botany textbook...great job Mark!! I can't get over the vivid colours. Next time Bill & I come to visit we'd love to go there...depending of course, on the time of year.
We thought spring was here but we were wrong...got more snow AGAIN on the weekend. I'm hoping the nice weather comes sooner than later. I saw my first robin last week but that's definitely later than previous years.

Awww, flowers.... after all that snow on the weekend... flowers remain a distant memory for now :P. I can't wait until spring really comes here... save me

It looks like I might "pop on over" to Ethiopia again in a few weeks... I'll have to get some recipes and ingredients for us :)
